S. Korea's Yoon Faces Death Penalty Demand Again in Insurrection Appeal
The team, headed by Special Counsel Cho Eun-suk, made the request before the Seoul High Court, where Yoon is contesting his life sentence, a national wire service reported.
Yoon received life imprisonment in February for leading an insurrection through his December 2024 martial law attempt. The move collapsed within hours after the National Assembly successfully blocked and overturned it.
Prosecutors first called for capital punishment in January of this year.
Yoon is facing eight trials in total, linked to his martial law attempt, alleged corruption involving his wife, and the 2023 death of a marine officer.
He was formally removed from office in April 2025, when the Constitutional Court unanimously upheld his impeachment over the Dec. 3, 2024 martial law declaration. That ruling set off a snap presidential election.
