South Korea Hails Ceasefire Deal Reached Between Iran, US

(MENAFN) South Korea's foreign ministry voiced its formal welcome Wednesday for the ceasefire agreement reached between Washington and Tehran, describing the truce as a critical opening for restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Seoul also acknowledged the mediation efforts of key countries, singling out Pakistan for its role in brokering the agreement, and expressed hope that ongoing negotiations between the two sides would reach a swift and successful conclusion — ultimately restoring peace and stability across the Middle East.

South Korea stressed the urgency of resuming safe and unimpeded passage through the Strait of Hormuz for all vessels, explicitly including South Korean ships among those affected by the prolonged disruption. The ministry confirmed that Seoul would maintain active communication and consultation with relevant countries to help facilitate that outcome.

The ceasefire was struck less than two hours before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump, with both sides agreeing to a two-week pause and follow-up negotiations to be held in Pakistan. Trump announced Tuesday he had agreed "to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks," conditioning the decision on Tehran's commitment to the complete, immediate, and safe reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

On the Iranian side, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Tehran would halt what he described as "defensive operations" contingent on attacks against Iran ceasing. Araghchi further pledged safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz during the two-week truce under "coordination" with Iranian armed forces, and confirmed that Iran would engage in negotiations with the US in Islamabad.
