S. Korea Wildfire Triggers Nationwide Emergency Response

(MENAFN) Emergency commanders initiated a countrywide deployment of firefighting resources Sunday to battle a rapidly spreading wildfire engulfing areas of Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang province, according to local media reports.

South Korea's national fire agency dispatched 119 specialized emergency response teams from five distinct regions—Daegu, Daejeon, Ulsan, Gangwon province, and South Chungcheong province—media reported.

Firefighter recovery vehicles rushed to the scene from Ulsan, Daegu, and Busan, converging on Gyeongju where flames first erupted Saturday.

The Korea Forest Service escalated its emergency protocol Sunday, implementing a Level One wildfire response posture as crews struggled to establish containment lines around the spreading blaze.

Officials confirmed containment efforts reached 23% effectiveness by midday, though the inferno had already consumed approximately 42 hectares of terrain.

The nationwide mobilization reflects the severity of conditions confronting emergency responders as they work to prevent the fire's expansion into surrounding communities.
