Iran Apprehends Two S. Koreans on Smuggling-Related Accusations

(MENAFN) Tehran has taken into custody two South Korean citizens on smuggling-related accusations, according to a South Korean news agency sources in Seoul on Monday.

Authorities apprehended the pair alongside an Iranian citizen approximately on November 20 in Iran's southwestern territory, diplomatic sources revealed to the South Korean news agency.

Among those detained is a staff member from a South Korean public agency, while the second South Korean detainee lives in Iran. All three individuals face identical charges, sources confirmed.

Iranian officials have not yet issued a public response to the allegations detailed in the report.

South Korean foreign ministry representatives confirmed they established communication with their Tehran embassy and Iranian government officials following the arrests, providing required consular assistance to the detained nationals.

"It is difficult to disclose details as the case is still under investigation by local authorities," a government official from South Korea said.

The incident adds to diplomatic sensitivities between Seoul and Tehran as the investigation proceeds under Iranian jurisdiction.
