South Korea Commemorates First Anniversary of Failed Martial Law
During a special national address marking the anniversary of the brief martial law declaration, Lee stated that by “defeating an unjust power” through peaceful measures, the South Korean populace had proven themselves “fully deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize,” according to a news agency.
Lee described the event as historically significant, saying, "It was the first time since the beginning of the 21st century that a coup occurred in a democracy like South Korea. Equally unprecedented in world history, the coup was peacefully and beautifully prevented by the hands of unarmed citizens," dubbing it the "revolution of light."
He added that, paradoxically, the Dec. 3 coup provided an opportunity to demonstrate to the international community the high civic awareness of the South Korean people and the extraordinary durability of the nation’s democracy.
The president further mentioned that the government, established in the wake of the “revolution of light,” plans to officially recognize Dec. 3 as National Sovereignty Day to honor the bravery of citizens.
During a subsequent press conference, he confirmed that there is an intention to declare it a public holiday.
President Lee also indicated his willingness to apologize to North Korea over the alleged drone missions by Yoon’s administration intended to distribute anti-regime leaflets in Pyongyang.
However, he acknowledged that the current political climate presents challenges to carrying out such a gesture, according to a media outlet.
