S. Korea’s Unification Minister Reveals Goal to Restore North Korea Talks
Speaking to reporters ahead of his inauguration, Chung emphasized the necessity of reopening dialogue channels between the two Koreas, describing it as a critical and urgent mission.
According to media, he stated, "Restoring communication channels and resuming dialogue (between the two Koreas) are tasks I must pursue as soon as possible."
Highlighting the prolonged silence, Chung pointed out that six years have passed without inter-Korean talks, calling the lapse far too extensive.
He further reflected on the deteriorating state of relations, noting, "The past three years have marked the worst point in inter-Korean relations, during which both sides responded to each other with animosity and confrontation," during his inauguration address. He added that rebuilding the ministry’s team is also a key priority moving forward.
Chung also identified the suspension of mutual propaganda broadcasts by Seoul and Pyongyang as an initial sign of renewed trust between the two nations.
This appointment marks Chung’s second tenure as South Korea’s unification minister.
